Showing the austerity and nobility that defines this vineyard site, the Michele Chiarlo 2016 Barolo Cannubi offers pretty concentration and a velvety texture that is accented by savory tones of red currant, spice, balsam herb and dark tar or licorice. There is a pretty mineral note, but it is very subtle and offers an unexpected pinch of salinity once it is revealed. The loose, sandy soils of Cannubi always render an extra notch of flavor concentration, and you get this especially well in this classic 2016 vintage. This wine will start to be more accessible some eight to 10 years after the harvest.
The Michele Chiarlo team has recently acquired two new vineyards totaling 10 hectares in the Nizza appellation in Monferrato. The Barbera grape has always been championed by father Michele and his son Stefano. The Chiarlo family owns a total of 20 hectares, and these newest additions include sites in Montemareto (with 2.5 hectares in Castelnuovo Calcea) and Moncucco Cavino (with 7.5 hectares in Mombercelli). Nizza earned DOCG status in 2014.
